by Chris Rudge – August 2005
With love in my heart I pray for peace in our hearts and in the world at large.
I pray for awareness that, but for some accident of time, geography, genealogy and culture,
We could be that which we are not, that which we don’t understand, that which we hate.
I pray for compassion so that, even if we cannot find it in ourselves to love that which we are not
We appreciate that, at some other time, in some other place, born to other parents with different beliefs,
We could be treading the other’s path, experiencing the other’s human condition.
I pray for compassion so that we don’t judge others or ourselves for being the human beings that we are and doing what we do,
Recognising that life can be difficult for each of us in similar ways and in ways of which we have no experience or insight.
I pray for compassion so that, when we fall short of our ideals, we can forgive, accepting our humanity and loving ourselves and each other in our weakness as in our strength
I pray for a wave of love to break down the barriers that isolate us from one another and that give illusion of rightness on one side and wrongness on the other.
I pray for each one of us to open our hearts to allow love to flow out and in, More readily seeking to understand others, expressing ourselves honestly and freely in order to be understood, and more accepting of differences
So that, together, we tap into the magic of creative solutions to issues that formerly had the potential to divide us, focussing now on how things can be better for all rather than for one over another,
So that we may live in peace and turn our attention and energies to improving the lot of our brothers and sisters who suffer, and to enjoying and caring for this beautiful planet that we share
I pray that our leaders use their power wisely, in the full realisation that this Earth and ordinary people benefit from or bear the brunt of their actions.
Many words spoken and many more that could be said but, in short, so that it begins in the heart of each one of us and becomes an irresistible force for good in thought and word and deed of daily life,
I pray that we love one another.

"Maximum Achievement" by Brian Tracy For me, this is one of the finest personal development books around - nearly 10 years old, but unmatched.
"The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey This is a classic - full of good advice.
"The Holographic Universe" by Michael Talbot This book profoundly changed my thinking about life, the universe and everything.

"...Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?... Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you..." Marianne Williamson
"Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." Dr. Harold Thurman
"Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody is watching." Mark Twain
"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." Mark Twain
"The Dash" poem by Linda Ellis - see http://www.the-dash-movie-poem.com for the version with music and colour, or if you prefer to read the plain versions, see http://www.lindaslyrics.com/The%20Dash%20Poem.html. Then consider how you are 'spending your dash'.
"If you think you are too small to make a difference, try spending a night with a mosquito." Gandhi
"Men talk of killing time, while time quietly kills them." Dion Boucicault
"And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." Abraham Lincoln
"For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way. Something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life." Fr. Alfred D'Souza
"To always be intending to live a new life, but never find time to set about it - this is as if a man should put off eating and drinking from one day to another till he be starved and destroyed." Walter Scott
"If we would only give, just once, the same amount of reflection to what we want to get out of life that we give to the question of what to do with a two weeks' vacation, we would be startled at our false standards and the aimless procession of our busy days." Dorothy Canfield Fisher
"Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets: Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!" W. H. Murray in The Scottish Himalaya Expedition, 1951

Whatever your religious views, this is thought-provoking: Interview with God
To dare to dream that for every question there's an answer... for every answer yet another question... and that in the asking there is renewed adventure... in that daring and dreaming is a symphony of ambition.
To dare to dream that my thinking and understanding might be heard and find its way into the shape of the future -- in that daring and dreaming is my energy for today.
To dare to dream that my skills might affect the destiny of other people -- in that daring and dreaming is my hope for tomorrow.
To dare to dream that the yearnings of my soul have a purpose which only I can find -- in that daring and dreaming is the road to discovery.
To dare to dream that the spirit of school might continue in me -- tempered with time, but relevant -- in that daring and dreaming is a yet greater symphony.
